What is the deal with make-up?

While doing a web search for a friend, I came across these two photos of Scarlett Johansson. Now, please... can someone tell me why on earth, Scarlett -- who looks absolutely stunning in the picture on the right -- would choose to look like she does in the photo on the left?

And if you say that it makes her feel good to wear make-up, I'll come over there and smack you (non-violently, of course)!
